R1,855 Discovery Miles 18 550 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

With advancing technology, students are getting accustomed to evermore portable resources on their phones - quick reference texts are therefore required to compete with this shift in approach. Where easy layouts assist with faster clinical reasoning, or ambulatory practice provides poor signal, printed text still out-competes digital technologies. Affordable and concise, this visually engaging concise textbook is easy to use as a revision aid and take on placement (veterinary EMS - Extra-mural studies). The spiralbound format allows it to lay flat when referred to in practice, adding another level of practical use. The emphasis will be on those things regularly available to general practitioners with minimal information of advanced techniques. Similar to the popular MiniVet guide, but for Equine: fills a gap for a concise, quick and easy practical reference for students in Equine practice. There’s a clear market for books that focus on best practices, protocols, flowcharts and treatment management for equine pathologies and thus provide a direct clinical approach to cases and clinical reasoning. The book is clearly divided into sub-sections, i.e., etiology, differential diagnosis etc. This makes it simple to follow and useful to apply to cases. The high quantity of pictures and diagrams help understanding of each different condition. International readership Can be bought as a single text or as a package with other books in the Equine Concise Textbook series Distills key information from 'Equine Clinical Medicine, Surgery and Reproduction 2E' which has previously been out of the student price range.

The Brain Code - Mechanisms of Information Transfer and the Role of the Corpus Callosum (Paperback): Norman D Cook The Brain Code - Mechanisms of Information Transfer and the Role of the Corpus Callosum (Paperback)
Norman D Cook
R1,072 Discovery Miles 10 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1986, this stimulating and unorthodox book integrates the major findings of hemispheric research with the larger questions of how the brain stores and transmits information - the 'brain code'. Norman Cook emphasizes how the two cerebral hemispheres communicate information over the corpus callosum, the largest single nerve tract of the human brain. Excitatory mechanisms are involved in the duplication of information between the hemispheres; in contrast, inhibitory mechanisms are implicated in the production of hemispheric asymmetries and, crucially, in high-level cognitive phenomena such as the right hemisphere's role in providing the 'context' within which left hemispheric verbal information is placed. These callosal mechanisms of information transfer are not only fundamental to the brain code; they are the simplest and most easily demonstrated ways in which the neocortex 'talks to itself'. The Brain Code demonstrates how popular topics within psychology at the time, such as laterality, hemisphere differences and the psychology of left and right, are central to further progress in understanding the human brain. This book provides stimulating reading for students of psychology, artificial intelligence and neurophysiology, as well as anyone interested in the broader question of how the brain works.

The People Of The Colca Valley - A Population Study (Hardcover): Noble D Cook, David Noble Cook The People Of The Colca Valley - A Population Study (Hardcover)
Noble D Cook, David Noble Cook
R3,830 Discovery Miles 38 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While it now attracts many tourists, the Colca Valley of Peru's southern Andes was largely isolated from the outside world until the 1970s, when a passable road was built linking the valley-and its colonial churches, terraced hillsides, and deep canyon-to the city of Arequipa and its airport, eight hours away. Noble David Cook and his co-researcher Alexandra Parma Cook have been studying the Colca Valley since 1974, and this detailed ethnohistory reflects their decades-long engagement with the valley, its history, and its people. Drawing on unusually rich surviving documentary evidence, they explore the cultural transformations experienced by the first three generations of Indians and Europeans in the region following the Spanish conquest of the Incas.

Rethinking Municipal Privatization (Paperback): Oliver D. Cooke Rethinking Municipal Privatization (Paperback)
Oliver D. Cooke
R510 Discovery Miles 5 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines one of the most high-profile municipal privatizations-the privatization of New York City's Central Park. The fiscal crisis of the 1970s established the political and cultural opening for privatizations, which were justified on the basis of increasing efficiency. However, as Cooke demonstrates, these justifications were deliberately blind to the social and economic implication of privatization. This fascinating account moves beyond the hackneyed pro- versus anti-privatization debate by reconceptualizing the park's privatization as an ensemble of contradictory class effects. It also highlights the immense theoretical and policy space for radically reconsidering and rethinking privatization processes in both the municipal and global contexts.

Maria I. Diedrich, Theron D. Cook, Flip Lindo
R648 Discovery Miles 6 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Upon walking U.S. inner-city streets you sooner or later come upon groups of black kids wearing prison-style outfits; there is a boom box, and rap music. And inevitably you will hear the N-word. Upon entering a district housing migrants in any European city you will encounter almost identical scenes - youngsters dressed in prison style, the boom box, rap. Only most of the kids are of a "white" or olive complexion. They call themselves "Wiggers," "white Niggers" or "Black albinos." It was this "Wigger" metaphor, with its implications of a transnational response to uprootedness and racialized exclusion that inspired CAAR to invite African American researchers working among inner city black youth and European and Israeli migration scholars to a symposium of trans-cultural and - national orientation called "Crossing Boundaries." We placed the study of African American youth - and thus a native though marginalized American population - next to research on migrant youth in Western Europe. The essays gathered here hope to contribute to an understanding on how to address the myriad challenges that both the youth and the countries in which they live must confront.

Harmony, Perspective, and Triadic Cognition (Paperback): Norman D Cook Harmony, Perspective, and Triadic Cognition (Paperback)
Norman D Cook
R1,172 Discovery Miles 11 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The big question in the science of psychology is: Why are human cognition and behavior so different from the capabilities of every other animal species on Earth including our close genetic relations, the chimpanzees? This book provides a coherent answer by examining those aspects of the human brain that have made triadic forms of perception and cognition possible. Mechanisms of dyadic association sufficiently explain animal perception, cognition, and behavior but a three-way associational mechanism is required to explain the human talents for language, tool-making, harmony perception, pictorial depth perception, and the joint attention that underlies all forms of social cooperation."

Wade D Cook, Joe Zhu
R6,324 Discovery Miles 63 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This handbook serves as a complement to the Handbook on Data Envelopment Analysis (eds, W.W. Cooper, L.M. Seiford and J, Zhu, 2011, Springer) in an effort to extend the frontier of DEA research. It provides a comprehensive source for the state-of-the art DEA modeling on internal structures and network DEA. Chapter 1 provides a survey on two-stage network performance decomposition and modeling techniques. Chapter 2 discusses the pitfalls in network DEA modeling. Chapter 3 discusses efficiency decompositions in network DEA under three types of structures, namely series, parallel and dynamic. Chapter 4 studies the determination of the network DEA frontier. In chapter 5 additive efficiency decomposition in network DEA is discussed. An approach in scale efficiency measurement in two-stage networks is presented in chapter 6. Chapter 7 further discusses the scale efficiency decomposition in two stage networks. Chapter 8 offers a bargaining game approach to modeling two-stage networks. Chapter 9 studies shared resources and efficiency decomposition in two-stage networks. Chapter 10 introduces an approach to computing the technical efficiency scores for a dynamic production network and its sub-processes. Chapter 11 presents a slacks-based network DEA. Chapter 12 discusses a DEA modeling technique for a two-stage network process where the inputs of the second stage include both the outputs from the first stage and additional inputs to the second stage. Chapter 13 presents an efficiency measurement methodology for multi-stage production systems. Chapter 14 discusses network DEA models, both static and dynamic. The discussion also explores various useful objective functions that can be applied to the models to find the optimal allocation of resources for processes within the black box, that are normally invisible to DEA. Chapter 15 provides a comprehensive review of various type network DEA modeling techniques. Chapter 16 presents shared resources models for deriving aggregate measures of bank-branch performance, with accompanying component measures that make up that aggregate value. Chapter 17 examines a set of manufacturing plants operating under a single umbrella, with the objective being to use the component or function measures to decide what might be considered as each plant's core business. Chapter 18 considers problem settings where there may be clusters or groups of DMUs that form a hierarchy. The specific case of a set off electric power plants is examined in this context. Chapter 19 models bad outputs in two-stage network DEA. Chapter 20 presents an application of network DEA to performance measurement of Major League Baseball (MLB) teams. Chapter 21 presents an application of a two-stage network DEA model for examining the performance of 30 U.S. airline companies. Chapter 22 then presents two distinct network efficiency models that are applied to engineering systems.

Fire in Tropical Savannas - The Kapalga Experiment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003): Alan N.... Fire in Tropical Savannas - The Kapalga Experiment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003)
Alan N. Andersen, Garry D. Cook, Richard J. Williams
R4,460 Discovery Miles 44 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fire is a major agent of disturbance in many biomes of the world but is a particularly important feature of tropical savannas. Up to 50% of the ext- sive tropical savanna landscapes of northern Australia are burnt each year. This includes prestigious conservation reserves such as World Heritage- listed Kakadu National Park, in the Top End of the Northern Territory. As in other savanna regions of the world, the responses of biota to different ?re regimes are poorly understood, such that ?re management represents one of the greatest challenges to conservation managers and researchers alike. This is the context within which a landscape-scale ?re experiment was established at Kapalga Research Station in Kakadu, which aimed to provide a sound scienti?c basis for conservation management in the region. The experiment was established by The Australian Commonwealth Scienti?c and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO),but involved collaborators from a range of universities and government agencies, including the m- agers of Kakadu, the Australian Nature Conservation Agency (ANCA:now Parks Australia North). This book summarizes the ?ndings from the Kapalga ?re experiment and explores the implications for conservation management. We believe that Kapalga has provided important insights into the ?re ecology of tropical savannas and has broad relevance for the conservation management of ?- prone landscapes in general. This book should be of interest to researchers, graduate students, and land management agencies. vii viii Preface We are extremely grateful to all our collaborators, both inside and outside CSIRO, for their involvement in the Kapalga experiment.

Joe Zhu, Wade D Cook
R3,169 Discovery Miles 31 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

DEA is computational at its core and this book will be one of several books that we will look to publish on the computational aspects of DEA. This book by Zhu and Cook will deal with the micro aspects of handling and modeling data issues in modeling DEA problems. DEA's use has grown with its capability of dealing with complex service industry and the public service domain types of problems that require modeling both qualitative and quantitative data. This will be a handbook treatment dealing with specific data problems including the following: (1) imprecise data, (2) inaccurate data, (3) missing data, (4) qualitative data, (5) outliers, (6) undesirable outputs, (7) quality data, (8) statistical analysis, (9) software and other data aspects of modeling complex DEA problems. In addition, the book will demonstrate how to visualize DEA results when the data is more than 3-dimensional, and how to identify efficiency units quickly and accurately.

Wade D Cook, Joe Zhu
R1,631 Discovery Miles 16 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modeling Performance Measurement: Applications and Implementation Issues in DEA presents unified results from several authorsa (TM) recent DEA research. These new DEA methodology and techniques are developed in application-driven scenarios that go beyond the identification of the best-practice frontier and seek solutions to aid managerial decisions. These new DEA developments are well-grounded in real world applications. Both DEA researchers and practitioners will find this book helpful. Theory is provided for DEA researchers for further development and possible extensions. However, it should also be mentioned that each theory is presented in practical terms with numerical examples, simple real management cases and verbal descriptions. These concrete examples will be of value to researchers, students, and practitioners.

Alan N. Andersen, Garry D. Cook, Richard J. Williams
R4,613 Discovery Miles 46 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The ten-year research program and the Kapalga fire experiment at CSIRO in Australia has provided a wealth of knowledge about savanna ecosystems and the critical but poorly understood role of fire. The frequent low intensity fires examined in this volume characterize fire in the tropics and are a dominant force in shaping the structure and function of tropical ecosystems. Contributors discuss fire in relation to rainfall, groundwater, and the mammals and plants in the ecology and management of ecosystems. Among the management issues addressed are: habitat management, endangered species, protection of people and property, erosion and nutrient depletion, integration of knowledge from indigenous people and western science, and atmospheric pollution from fire smoke. This book will be valuable to tropical and savanna ecologists, fire ecologists and fire managers throughout the world, whether they are interested in plants, animals, soils or in the landscape as a whole.
